Loyalty has always been the alpha and omega of Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s presidency. But all the forms of allegiance that have bound together her administration — military, political, ideological and personal — are being shredded, leaving only blind loyalty. Nunalisa has surrounded herself with loyalists, who fervently pledged their fealty, enforced the loyalty of others and sought to make loyal converts. Now Gloria’s long downfall is descending into a series of revenge tragedies in which the characters are helpless against the furies of their misplaced loyalties and betrayals. The stage is being strewn with hacked corpses — In Congress,Villafuerte the avid pusher of Cha-Cha walked-out leaving Nograles alone to fight on the floor imminently,Vice president Noli De Castro: tomorrow, whoever remains trapped on the ghost ship of state. As the individual tragedies unfold, Nunalisa”s royal robes unravel.—Maybe,a legal separation between Nunalisa and the Big Pig!
Loyalty to Nunalisa is the ultimate royal principle of the corrupt presidency. The ruler must be unquestioned and those around her unquestioning. Allegiance to Nunalisa’s idea of herself as the “Most corrupt president,” “the decider” and “the commander gulay of the Military” is paramount. But the notion that the ruler is loyal to those loyal to her is no longer necessarily true. While she must be beheld as the absolute incarnation of virtue, her sense of obligation to those paying homage has become perilously relative.
Those who feel compelled to tell the truth rather than stick to the cover story are cast in the dust, like Jun Lozada. Those Nunalisa defends as an extension of her authority but who become too expensive become expendable, like Esperon,Bolante,Raul Gonzales and those who exist solely as Nunalisa’s creations and whose survival is crucial to her own are shielded, like Ombudswoman Merceditas Gutierres..
Critics, including some of Nunalisa’s opponents, have accused Merceditas Gutierres of having committed an unethical act and has even lodged a complaint to Congressional ethics committees.-Impeachment!
The last time I check our written Constituition,we are still living in Democratic form of Government.Democracy in the fullest sense of the word means full freedom of speech and association; the accountability and transparency of government; equality before the law; the separation of powers between the legislative, executive and judicial arms of government; tolerance and rqual protection of views and interests; and the nurture of civil society institutions like the media and NGOs.
It is at this point that this Democracy concept puzzles me, because the very same people that they are preaching to are not doing that in return.
Statistics show how high the level of poverty, corruption by the office bearers and that of unemployment is in our country particularly in the rural areas. How can people trade their votes in the name of loyalty to people who are no longer serving them but their own stomachs and enriching themselves.
We can have many opposition parties but none of them will succeed until we break this barrier of “blind loyalty, crab mentality and Utang na Loob” that seems to rule the people’s minds and people need to be taught about governance in order for them not to fall victims of food parcels in return of their votes.
How painful it is to see young and old living in the same conditions of famine yet they claim to have voted for the people’s movement for change.Filipino people, let’s move on and not allow the Nunalisa cronies to be stinking rich at the expense of the poor and the ignorant who cannot distinguish between black and white.
Let’s hope our people have a better understanding of democracy by the time we go to the polls again in 2010, because the opposition parties are bound to grow more and pose an even more serious challenge to END the Pidalism regime.
