My high school classmate has turned into rice vendor, but of course there is more here than that meets the eye. After graduating in college with a bachelor’s degree in Marketing he should have been sitting in an air conditioned cabin pulling a hefty salary at a big company. Instead, he stands in the sweltering heat in our town selling vegetables.
I asked him what happen about the good composition he wrote in class on our English subject about his ambition. He want to become a good businessman, build a mansion and fill the garage with a late model cars and travel. He told me he was over educated and less qualified for the job he applied because he doesn’t have any connection with politicians and after facing many difficulties and challenges in employment he gave-up.
Good news though, he proudly told me, he celebrate the fact that his daughter graduated college and passed the Nursing Licensure Exams. They’ve reached a milestone they set for many years. they ‘ve made sacrifices. He mortgage the pieces of land he inherited from his parents to pay for the clothes, foods, tuitions, boarding house and for five years his daughter is back at home cooking and cleaning, waiting and looking for a US citizen to marry so that she can able to come and work in America.
I can imagine that this is a depressing experience for my friend and told them that the demand for a Filipino nurses in United States is failling and the quality of nursing education has also been declining due to the nursing exam scandals. The Philippine government is commercializing the profession.Money are wasted in tuition payments by parents whose children can not pass those board exams. Some student entered the nursing program without a real clear purpose of why they are in school. They thoroughly enjoyed the extra-curricular activities, parties, dating, sex and all of the great fun things college offers. They attended class. They did well in some, not so well in others. They found excuses because these are the courses their parents want so that they can go abroad and earn a lot.If they can’t fly and leave the Philippines, they become statistics and finds themselves unemployed after graduation.
As my classmate measure the grain of rice on his digital weigh machine, I gave him cash for 30 kilos for his hungry customers. He thank me with a parting word,”Please find my daughter a US citizen pen-pal in America.”
