How much is your life worth to you? On the face of it, that’s an idiotic question. No amount of money could compensate you for the loss of your life, for the simple reason that the money would be no good to you if you were dead. And you might feel, for different reasons, that the money value of the lives of your spouse or children — or even a stranger living on the other side of the country — is also infinite. No one should be knowingly sacrificed for a sum of money: that’s what I mean when I say that human life is priceless. But Sulpicio Lines set a price for it 200,000 pesos to legal heirs of the victims and that’s equates to $5,000 on the exchange rate of 40 pesos.Sulpicio are asserting that the incident was an act of God.
The Ferry tragedy was so horrific that normal legal connections between fault and the responsibility to make whole were swept away in the desire to ease the pain and provide a speedy remedy to those whose financial support had vanished. No one who suffered loss is going to be made entirely whole; no amount of compensation can replace the lost lives. But ungenerous and unsympathetic owner is trying to ease those losses with unreasonable compensation. It is not too much to expect a modest show of gratitude from the Sulpicio Line’s generosity.
Sulpicio has done nothing but make excuses and make the lives of the families of the passengers miserable. Instead of giving comfort and assurance, they are trying to save face, and rescue their image. They are embarking on a set policy that they have perfected in their murderous years of operation, in order to make any future compensation too little, and too hard to receive. They are implementing a policy in order to keep their company afloat. The murderous nature of this shipping company must stop. If for no other reason than to help future victims of Sulpicio and to give justice to the thousands of lives lost because of the inadequacies of this company. The impudent of Sulpicio Lines to put one over the entire country and authorities when they didn’t even inform rescue teams that their ship was carrying poisonous cargo is nothing compared to what they are now trying to pull.
When they announced to compensate those who would rather not use the courts with little amount,I was howled with outrage. How dare they offer them so little ! How dare they insult our Filipino compassion. Some will try to explain away this boorish behavior as anguish brought on by the pain and suffering that these people experienced. We all know that no amount of money can replace a loved one. But nevertheless, there was no government plan to help the heirs of the MV Princess of the Stars tragedy .They just had to get over it and get on with it.
This is scornfully dismissing compensation:200,000 pesos is very little for them. This settlement does not make them happy.Give them million or they will sue!
