For several years after EDSA that swept Erap from power, many Filipinos feel that the advent of democracy and prosperity has brought no positive changes. Despite of Gloria Arroyo’s political and economic reforms there is a widespread disillusionment among the country’s poor.
The fall of Erap-the common “Taong Masa” – see democracy mostly as an annoying disturbance of public life. Democracy and prosperity is only for rich people. The country of 80 million more with so many cultures and religions, known for its tolerance, was falling apart. For millions, daily life had become a simple struggle to survive.
Democracy did not automatically attract much-needed investors.Corruption became even more widespread. The Mafia in government had learned and master the art and tricks of corruption and were not afraid of their bosses anymore.Bribery used to happen under the table, now they steal the whole table.
Many times I have wondered when Filipinos would start to revolt. But they never did. They did not support the noble cause of the Magdalo and Jun Lozada, with remarkable strenght and survival instincts they managed to muddle through. Some Magdalo have chickened-out and pleaded guilty in exchange for pardons. The biggest change of all bravery that fired inside has gone. People are now afraid to voice their opinion anymore.
Corruption was the rallying call of the mass protest that toppled Erap from the presidency and the people are either afraid to correct their grave mistakes or to commit another mistakes.CBCP admitted that EDSA 2 was an error by their Cardinal Sin.
Many of the millions of political opponents of Arroyo imprisoned under her rule, the “Batasan Five” were being jailed for clinching there close fist on the air for expressing their opinions.Ka Bell was the one who stayed long and become permanent on the “Resident of Evil” on his solidarity room.Bless his soul. But, Arroyo’s Government denies any crackdown on political opponents. They only filed a Libel charged to those who are critical to her Government.Archbishop Oscar Cruz had been slapped with Libel case for refusing to give communion to the sinners. Now,Ces Drilon is still in captivity by her hostage takers.
Taong masa, students, civic and religious groups who considered themselves heroes of Philippine’s struggle for democracy from the previous EDSA are now feeling the pressure. Our democracy is only half-hearted. Disguised as democracy the government is still using iron fist and Democracy has brought unprecedented freedom.
This democracy, it’s just about promises, and promises, but then the politicians never keep their promises.Under Marcos and Erap ordinary workers found it much easier to make money and feed their families. Things were cheap then, now everything is expensive including talbos ng camote, people, making at least minimum wage a day is not enough to support his family, send his two children to school and pay the rent and electric bill, although Gloria Arroyo are giving them P500.subsidy in exchange for them to rally against Meralco para ibagsak ang kuryenti.
Food prices are spiralling, But the government says the opening up Philippine economy has lured foreign investors back to Philippines, creating the sharpest economic growth in a decade and a million people entered the workforce as OFW because they don’t have jobs in our country, the Indian National has conquered the 5/6 businesses. Gloria Arroyo also says that its pro-poor policies, which include a planned cash handout of 500 pesos for electric bill, as well as welfare benefits for the poor who keep their children in school, have helped reduce poverty levels by not wearing uniform.
Maybe, “Taong Masa” waiting is a miracle for them to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Let me share you this story forwarded on my e-mail by our friend Chi.
May we all have the faith of a child…
A little girl went to her bedroom and pulled a glass jelly jar from its hiding place in the closet.
She poured the change out on the floor and counted it carefully. Three times, even. The total had to be exactly perfect. No chance here for mistakes.
Carefully placing the coins back in the jar and twisting on the cap, she slipped out the back door and made her way 6 blocks to Rexall’s Drug Store with the big red Indian Chief sign above the door.
She waited patiently for the pharmacist to give her some attention, but he was too busy at this moment. Tess twisted her feet to make a scuffing noise. Nothing. She cleared her throat with the most disgusting sound she could muster. No good. Finally she took a quarter from her jar and banged it on the glass counter. That did it!
‘And what do you want?’ the pharmacist asked in an annoyed tone of voice. I’m talking to my brother from Chicago whom I haven’t seen in ages,’ he said without waiting for a reply to his question.
‘Well, I want to talk to you about my brother,’ Tess answered back in the same annoyed tone. ‘He’s really, really sick … and I want to buy a miracle.’
‘I beg your pardon?’ said the pharmacist.
‘His name is Andrew and he has something bad growing inside his head and my Daddy says only a miracle can save him now. So how much does a miracle cost?’
‘We don’t sell miracles here, little girl. I’m sorry but I can’t help you,’ the pharmacist said, softening a little.
‘Listen, I have the money to pay for it. If it isn’t enough, I will get the rest. Just tell me how much it costs.’
The pharmacist’s brother was a well dressed man. He stooped down and asked the little girl, ‘What kind of a miracle does your brother need?’
‘ I don’t know,’ Tess replied with her eyes welling up. ‘I just know he’s really sick and Mommy says he needs an operation. But my Daddy can’t pay for it, so I want to use my money.’
‘How much do you have?’ asked the man from Chicago .
‘One dollar and eleven cents,’ Tess answered barely audibly.
‘And it’s all the money I have, but I can get some more if I need to.’
‘Well, what a coincidence, ‘ smiled the man. ‘A dollar and eleven cents – the exact price of a miracle for little brothers.’
He took her money in one hand and with the other hand he grasped her mitten and said ‘Take me to where you live. I want to see your brother and meet your parents. Let’s see if I have the miracle you need.’
That well dressed man was Dr. Carlton Armstrong, a surgeon, specializing in neuro-surgery. The operation was completed free of charge and it wasn’t long until Andrew was home again and doing well.
Mom and Dad were happily talking about the chain of events that had led them to this place.
‘That surgery,’ her Mom whispered. ‘was a real miracle. I wonder how much it would have cost?’
Tess smiled. She knew exactly how much a miracle cost … one dollar and eleven cents plus the faith of a little child.
In our lives, we never know how many miracles we will need.
A miracle is not the suspension of natural law, but the operation of a higher law. I know you’ll keep the ball moving!
Here it goes. Throw it back to someone who means something to you!
A ball is a circle, no beginning, no end. It keeps us together like our Circle of Friends. But the treasure inside for you to see is the treasure of friendship you’ve granted to me.
Today I pass the friendship ball to you.
Pass it on to someone who is a friend to you.
After more than seven years, the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) acknowledged the error of the “Sin era” in supporting the second people’s uprising on EDSA, and wants to “make up” for it.
Whatever statement they offer to the public, CBCP wins. Kung against kay Gloria, there’s more bags full of money same as when the statement favor the pandakekang bitch.
I completely lost my trust in the collective CBCP.
Often, I wonder how much it would have cost to have Pinas surgically cured?’ But in adult lingo, this means violence that we avoid to take place.
Perhaps, what we all need is that essence we have already forgotten, the mind of a child because it is only in the mind of an innocent child that miracle happens and ultimately becomes a reality.
We, grown-ups, become complicated in our actions and thinking forgetting our pure mind that does all the miracle. We should go back occasionally to what we were once before to transcend complications.
Happy Fathers Day to All who were once a Child!
Cocoy,
That’s Cocoy, our brilliant entrepreneur and excellent father.
It is your week, fathers. Enjoy!
And may we have more Dr. Carlton Armstrongs and Doc Bobonyos to assist in the miracles of the One high above.
Kasamang Chi,
The Mafia in government had learned and master the art and tricks of corruption and were not afraid of their bosses anymore.Bribery used to happen under the table, now they steal the whole table.
Hahahahaha!
FPJ
Welcome back, Erap!
Manay Chi & all
Here’s the opening paragraph of one account about miracle written by Melody Masha who underwent double lung transplant:
I have always believed in miracles. Since childhood, when I thought pretty much everything was a miracle. At five, when you don’t understand science or logic all that well, a ball bouncing down the sidewalk all by itself seems pretty special. As years passed in increments, I saw more evidence of miracles. I saw rainbows and reflections of light in puddles of rain. And of course, there was the Slinky. So, to my mind’s eye, the more I saw, the more I believed. It is a charming way to perceive the world. Moreover, it fills you with the idea that nothing is impossible. And that concept shaped my life. Miracles, the “technically unexplainable,” happen in spite of people who say they can’t or write them off to mere coincidence.
Happy Father’s Day to all fathers, would-be fathers and even the fatherless.
We, the living creatures in itself is a miracle. Without looking up the definition, to me a miracle is something good, something special, something dreamed about that becomes a reality, something people can’t live without, something that seems impossible before it happens.
So, as we celebrate Father’s Day, just look around, just look at the people and your kids, their innocence and smiles. We’re all part of a big miracle.
Just looking outside and noticing nature as it was intended….. the beauty in everything that sometimes we take for granted. We are all are a part and parcel of nature and that’s in itself is a miracle.
Joeseg,
or logical?
Basahin natin ito:
After having failed his exam in ‘Logistics and Organization’ , a student goes and confronts his lecturer about it.
Student: ‘Sir, do you really understand anything about the subject?’
Professor: ‘Surely I must. Otherwise I would not be a professor!’
Student: ‘Great, well then I would like to ask you a question.
If you can give me the correct answer, I will accept my mark as is and go. If you however do not know the answer, I want you give me an ‘A’ for the exam. ‘
Professor: ‘Okay, it’s a deal. So what is the question?’
Student: ‘What is legal, but not logical, logical, but not legal, and neither logical, nor legal?’
Even after some long and hard consideration, the professor cannot give the student an answer, and therefore changes his exam mark into an ‘A’, as agreed.
Afterwards, the professor calls on his best student and asks him the same question.
He immediately answers: ‘Sir, you are 63 years old and married to a 35 year old woman, which is legal, but not logical. Your wife has a 25 year old lover, which is logical, but not legal. The fact that you have given your wife’s lover an ‘A’, although he really should have failed, is neither legal, nor logical.’
Yes cocoy, Pinoy has become disillusioned with a political system that is fundamentally flawed and only benefits the few. Many Pinoy have become tired of street politics as nothing fundamentally changes. Erap, who was accused of grave corruption, was ousted because of people power. Hope for a non-corrupt and better governance filled the Filipinos. However, it turned out worse and as disappointment.
We are made to believe that the economy is growing, but only the high class were benefited. The less fortunate still remain as is and were taken advantage of.
Let me post here an article by: A. Wilbert S. Dianon, SDB.
You’ll be the jiudge.
EDSA DOS, EXODUS
EDSA DOS, like the exodus story of Israel, is God’s liberation to the Filipinos from a corrupt system substantiated by President Estrada and his cronies. More than an event, liberation is a real experience of both the ancient Israel and the modern Filipinos who wanted to get rid of this enslaving system that existed in their society. In Exodus, the king enslaved the people in order to satisfy his megalomaniac tendency. In EDSA DOS, people protesting the President’s move to keep the people poor in order to prolong his extravagant lifestyle. In Exodus, God intervened through Moses. In EDSA DOS, God’s presence was greatly felt through those who saw the situation well. The place of miracle for Israel is Goshen; EDSA is where the Filipinos encounter God’s wonder.
For the chosen people Israel, number 40 is very significant. Moses’ lifetime is divided into three: 40 years in Egypt, 40 years in Midian, and 40 years in the desert. His age is 120 years old (Deut 37:4). Israel herself journeyed in the desert for 40 years. At the same time, the Filipinos experienced a so-called struggle for freedom for ‘40’ days. The impeachment trial for the President started in December 11, 2000 and unexpectedly ended in January 20, 2001. Gloria was sworn into office in January 21, 2001.
The event in EDSA had some connections with the issue of the first-born child. Pharaoh ended his aggression over the poor Israelites after the death of his first-born heir. Estrada was completely overpowered not by the death of the first-born but by the feast of the First-born of all creation – the Santo Niño. By January 21, 2001, Estrada was completely relinquished from office.
The former president loses his moral ascendancy to rule his people because of his immoral activities on the record. The authority of the leader is strengthened by the uprightness of his lifestyle, which Estrada lost. Consequently, his authority to lead the Filipinos to moral living is nil. As the teacher of morality, the Church, in the person of Cardinal Jaime Sin stepped into the limelight to clarify the issue of what was later called EDSA DOS.
It needs the guts of a great prophet to denounce the evil in this society started from the leader down to the most ordinary citizen of the country. And being the prophet, Cardinal Sin and the Church hierarchy had to expose their vulnerability in order to uphold the truth. Their opponent is not just an ordinary citizen of the country – he was the President of the Republic. Their lives are in hot waters. All the same, they hold on to what is true – the people wanted freedom.
Similarly, Moses and Aaron experienced this kind of situation when they opposed the Pharaoh of Egypt for his cruelty against the Israelites. They must have been frightened to the bones by these aggressive acts. Well, they just did what God told them to do. Indeed, these two men were prophets denouncing the evil of the Pharaoh. They stepped into the limelight not for their own glorification, but to tell Pharaoh about the truth. He must allow the people to enjoy freedom.
As the king for such nuisance could have killed Moses and Aaron, the Church leaders could have experienced the same possibility. But no, the events that followed were seemingly woven together by one who knows very well the situation. Surprisingly, not a single man/woman was responsible for this. It was divinely ordained. God was taking Moses’ side when He sent devastating plagues over Egypt. God was in EDSA DOS, when damning witnesses appeared and devastating series of events in the impeachment process took place. The death of the first – born was the end of Pharaoh’s tyrannical rule. But the apparent death of the truth in the Senate was certainly the beginning of it all.
God was in EDSA because God is always with His people. God was always with Israel because they were His chosen people.
The whole of EDSA DOS is about freedom and truth. These are the two basic Christians values, which in time immemorial had been the issues of different empires, states and civilization. These two core values of the people have always been transgressed by so many rulers and leaders. The truth is, the Filipino were fed up with this deep-seated immoralities perpetrated by the country’s leaders themselves. These corrupt structures in our society truly enslaved the people with no apparent solutions. Joseph Estrada’s downfall was due to the fact that he had not improved the moral, social, and economic structure of the country. And this unpleasant image of the President was corroborated by reports of his continuous womanizing, favoring cronies, receiving money from gambling lords and secret business transactions.
From the standpoint of leadership, the Filipinos are not a sovereign people. And this is not true of the people. They are tired of this image, which of course does not reflect their true identity. Falsehood in the government makes the people tired and angry. Away with those enslaving system!
Indeed, EDSA DOS is the exodus experience of the Filipino people. They have just started their wandering in the desert. But more than a wandering (which connotes no direction), the Filipino are on a journey – towards a society of economic prosperity due to their leader’s moral ascendancy. There are still many difficulties and trials they have to face and conquer in this journey. It now depends on them – whether to face these trouble with great courage or to go back to the enslaving system. For sure, a trial is already in sight. This is the upcoming election. The people have to elect those officials who have moral integrity. Otherwise, they would again stage EDSA TRES, which really burdens the Filipinos themselves. And as the Israelites wandered in the desert for so long (40 years), they should not forget that they might be dilly-dallying in their journey towards the better future. Why? Learn from the Israelites. The people in the desert did not put their full trust in the Lord. They always complained against God. Similarly, the rebirth of the Filipino people would always be hinged in their trust in the Lord who liberated them in the EDSA DOS.
If EDSA DOS was God’s will, Why we are being ruled by a devil president? It is risky and dangerous position if religion meddle in government because these religion don’t preach godwill.Religion’s primary purpose is to suck money from it’s people.
Cardinal Sin,himself was a sinner. He was a hoodlum in robes.
Korek, Greggy.
It’s about time these catholic and church leader’s moron apologized to Erap, but, what good can do now, they looted the country and levelled the ravage to the ground.
Off topic.

tnx for the post sir cocoy!
yhen,
Thank you also, you have written a good topic always in you site and I am a frequent visitor at your blog.I like the way you write.
I have nothing against miracles because ou Lord Jesus himself performed so many miracles in the Bible. Even the Apostles themselves impowered by the Holy Spirit performed miracles.
Lokal ang dating, very colorful and all that is beautiful in Pinas kong mahal.
Manay Chi
Ikaw ha? Nabisto na talaga ako nang husto.
Alam mo ba ang latest about Hillary? This one came from Jay Leno:
“There’s a lot of pressure on Barack Obama to put Hillary on the ticket. Even his advisers are telling him that Hillary can deliver the woman vote. And, of course, Bill can deliver the other woman vote. So between the two of them, that’s, you know, that’s a lot of women.”
Hahaha! Sure, bill can deliver the other woman vote.
I guess it’s John Edwards to be BO’s running mate. When Edwards endorsed Barack right after his big win at NC, I had the feel that they’ve ‘talked’ already. Kasi, Edwards wife actually endorsed Hillary’s health program as better na Barack’s prior, short of them endorsing her. Edwards, a royal in NC circles is a trapo actually.
